Dually Rear Wheel Trucks vs. Single Rear Wheel Trucks

When building a truck camper, our highest priority is to build within a truck’s payload capacity. Lately we have almost exclusively been recommending and building on the F350 4x4 dually rear wheel (DRW) or a Dodge 3500 4x4 DRW verses these trucks single rear wheel (SRW) versions. Now before you cringe at the wide butts of the dually, let me explain how we keep the payload of the dually, but give our customers the maneuverability of the single rear wheel trucks.
First please note the shocking difference in maximum payload between the F350 4x4 single rear wheel (SRW) of 4,360 lbs. vs. the F350 4x4 dually rear wheel (DRW) of 7,230 lbs. – 2,870 lbs. more payload capacity with a F350 4x4 DRW! (Please click here for Ford’s Brochure and note on page 38 that the payload capacities for Ford’s trucks are clearly labeled).
When our customers that need an additional 2,000 pounds of payload, we simply replace the rear dually tires with single rear wheel tires that meet the gross vehicle weight rating of the dually trucks (usually around 14,000 pounds). Then we are left with a truck that has the payload of the dually rear wheel truck but the maneuverability of a single rear wheel truck. In addition, we remove the existing bed that is extremely wide and replace it with a flatbed that sleekly matches the narrower dimensions of the single rear wheel trucks. It’s honestly basic truck craftsman work, but a great way to get the needed payload for hauling a loaded camper comfortably and safely on and off road.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
Thanks, Sarah
